Yummy Thai- authentic Thai restaurant in Seoul, South Korea

Sometimes you just have a craving for Thai food…or if you are me you are pretty much always have the craving. Living in what is referred to as a rural city in South Korea has it’s plusses and minuses. Plus = not many tourists. Minus = 99% of the restaurants in my neighbourhood are Korean (which is great, but some days you just want something a little different). So, when the mood strikes we train it into Seoul…and find ourselves spoiled for choice- surrounded by pretty much every flavour imaginable…Where to begin? It is rather overwhelming, and in my experience, foreign food restaurants in Korea have flavours that fall short with steep prices. I have begun to just not bother trying to satisfy those darn cravings- instead sticking to learning about and eating my way through the expansive variety of the local cuisine…but in a metropolitan hub like Seoul, you know that great international restaurants do exist…it is just the matter of finding them.

And that is where Yummy Thai comes in. A little cafe style restaurant- black and white with brightly coloured pillows dotting the banquettes. Away from the big crowds of Hongdae and Itwaewon- off one of those subway stops that you might be prone to overlook. The menu has all of the favourites: spring rolls, pad thai, panang curry, green papaya salad…along with many other tantalizing choices (and vegetarian options). My curry had that delicious balance of spicy combined with the citrus hints of lemongrass that had me literally sopping up the last bit of sauce with anything I could find. We also ordered a shrimp dish (pad ka prao)studded with holy basil that brought a little sweat to the brow. Next to the counter was a collection of maps of Thailand that the owner was happy to give away to us when she found out we were in the middle of planning a trip to her home country. An awesome bonus to a meal that already had me smiling. At an average of $15 a plate, Yummy Thai should definitely be on your ‘night out’ list.

How to get there: Take line 4 and get off at the Sookmyung Women’s University Stop and leave through exit 3. Yummy Thai will be straight ahead, on your right.
