D House Boutique Resort is a unique little place tucked away on a quiet pedestrian only street in an old section of Hangzhou. It is a hidden gem of a spot: perfectly located just steps away from Qinghefang Ancient Street, old neighbourhood alleys, picturesque walks along the canal, a drum tower, and Zhongshan Road- which shuts down to traffic in the evenings to make way for an assortment of food stalls and stands selling baubles. If that weren’t enough, it is a pleasant 30 minute walk to the West Lake area and Leifang Pagoda. All of the best parts of Hangzhou at your fingertips.
Wander off Datong Alley and enter a fairly nondescript door of an historical building with a Chinese-only sign to find yourself in a charming lobby complete with a friendly dog to greet you. D House Boutique is composed of a small collection of eccentric rooms built around a courtyard in a traditional style building that has been updated to suit more modern tastes. Every room is different…
Birds chirp outside the window, a gong sounds to begin the day, and a lovely breakfast of congee with steamed bread and coffee for you to enjoy in the courtyard sets the scene for a wonderful trip through China.
When we visited, the staff of the hotel spoke very limited English- so make sure that you have your reservation information printed out and on hand. Everyone was really wonderful, and they even drew us a map in attempts to explain just how easy it was to get to the West Lake. We had a bit of trouble finding D House (you can read more about that here.) Since it is located on a street where cars are not allowed, be prepared to walk with your luggage for a few minutes. It is totally worth it. I suggest that you get dropped off on the corner of Guangfu Road and Hefang Street (the other name for Qinghefang) (Click here for a map). Our ‘taxi’ dropped us off on the Dajing Alley side and it was a longer walk.
